Banks and the U.S. Postal Service are closed today in observance of Columbus Day. Post offices are closed and mail will not be delivered. The federally observed holiday falls the second Monday of October each year. Two years ago, Governor Kim Reynolds proclaimed Iowa’s first Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday of October.
According to the Library of Congress, the first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place October 12, 1792, the 300th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ landing.
