The stage was set last night in Mediapolis with two volleyball teams undefeated in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division squaring off for the division crown in the regular season finale. The home team stood no chance against a hungry Winfield-Mt. Union squad and the Wolves seized the title with a sweep.
It was a long time coming for the Wolves, as they captured their first conference championship since 1996 and did so against a team they haven’t beat since 2001. You wouldn’t know it by simply watching last night’s match, as they had little trouble with set wins of 25-10, 25-16, and 25-16. Jenna Buffington led the offense with 12 kills, Keely Malone dished out 12 assists, and Kayla Edwards managed 10 assists. Melina Oepping had an unblemished serving night being successful on all 16 attempts and recording three aces. Bradie Buffington paced the defense with three blocks and Kyndal Townsley hustled for 10 digs.
Head Coach Dave Pieart tells KCII Sports what the title means for the program. “It was tremendous. I have taken a bunch of teams to Mediapolis over the years with a chance to be conference champs and we couldn’t pull it out until tonight. It is rewarding to see all of these kids’ effort they have put in pay off.”
The Wolves finished the regular season 21-6 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the league. They start up the class 1A regionals on Monday hosting Hillcrest Academy (3-19).
