Drivers are reminded to keep kids safe and stop for buses during National Bus Safety Week this week. This year’s national theme is “Red Lights Mean Stop.” According to the National Association of Pupil Transportation, around 25 million children ride school buses every day to school. Yet, the most dangerous part of riding a school bus is getting on and off the bus. Half of pedestrian fatalities in school bus-related crashes are children between five- and seven-years-old. Whether you are behind a stopped bus or in the opposite lane of traffic, drivers are required to stop when school buses are dropping off kids and their stop sign is activated. Students riding the bus should stand a safe distance from the road when waiting for a bus, never pick up a dropped item from the road, and always stay seated and sit quietly while on the bus.
