The biggest competition of the season is tonight for the Washington cross country team, as they make a trip North to Monticello for a class 3A state qualifying meet.

Lance Sobaski will try to qualify for Fort Dodge in back-to-back seasons and the junior is coming off of a memorable week where he became the first Demon boy to claim a Southeast Conference title. Micah Rees also received an all-conference medal by claiming 10th. The girls’ are fresh off of a second place finish at conference where Abby Kleese and Hannah Rees placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

Head Coach Stefanie Haworth tells KCII Sports what they can expect with an unfamiliar course. “We have not been up there, but what we have heard is that it is comparable to the North Linn and Fort Madison courses where we ran well at. It is at the high school so it will be pretty flat. We should run fast times and competition will help with that so overall I think it will be a good course for us.”

The top 15 individuals and top three teams advance to next week’s state meet. The girls’ race begins at 4 p.m. tonight with the boys’ to follow in Monticello.
