No questions asked, safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications this weekend. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Police Department, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are teaming up for the drug take back program. People can drop off pills or patches at the United Presbyterian Church parking lot in Washington from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The program gives people a chance to get rid of old medications and prevent pill abuse and theft by getting them out of their homes. Drop off sites cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps. The service is free and anonymous.

Nationwide last fall, Americans turned in nearly 883,000 pounds of prescription drugs. And since the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative began in 2010 nearly 6,350 tons of expired, unused, or unwanted prescription medications have been collected.

The Washington County Jail also has a secure drop box for people to dispose of unwanted medications year-round.
