The Iowa High School State Cross Country Meet will commence today in Fort Dodge and for the fifth straight year Washington will be represented.

Lance Sobaski will be making his second appearance at the big dance and the junior qualified after placing second at last week’s state qualifier in Monticello with a school record time of 16:27. The final Iowa Association of Track and Field Coaches poll has Sobaski ranked #16 and the top 15 in Fort Dodge receive a medal. Head Coach Stefanie Haworth tells KCII Sports Lance already has a Southeast Conference title on his resume and now he wants some state hardware. “One of his goals is definitely to medal and that would be a program’s first. Anything can happen that day and he has made it there so any finish is icing on the cake. He just has to go out there and run like he has all season, take the pressure off, and go have fun.” As a sophomore, Sobaski placed 95th at the annual meet in a time of 17:48.

The class 3A boys’ race is set to begin at 4 p.m. today at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. Class 3A and 4A will compete today with 1A and 2A set to run tomorrow.
