Over 700 more people voted in Tuesday’s General Election in Washington County than in 2016’s election. According to unofficial results from Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer, 11,812 total ballots were cast in this election. He said there are 15,576 registered voters in the county, so nearly 76% of voters took part in the process this election. Four years ago, 11,093 people voted with a voter turnout of just over 73% at that time. Since 2016, Washington County’s total number of registered voters increased by 405 people.
Secretary of State Paul Pate said Iowans broke the all-time turnout record for a general election with more than 1,697,000 Iowans casting ballots. The previous record was set in 2012 with 1,589,951 voters. He added that as of Wednesday morning, there were 1,001,840 absentee ballots received by county auditors. Pate said that’s another new record. In Iowa, absentee ballots postmarked by November 2nd and received by noon on November 9th will be counted. Pate reminds voters that all results remain unofficial until canvassing is completed and results are certified on November 30th.
