Now through November 29th, law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout more closely for drivers in southeast Iowa and across the state who aren’t wearing seatbelts. Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri are among the states being targeted in “The Click It Or Ticket” campaign by the U.S. Department of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Region 7 State Highway Safety Offices. Drivers can expect a highly visible presence by law enforcement in an effort to seek an increase in seat belt usage; especially among hard-to-reach young adults. In crashes in 2019, more than half (58%) of 18-to-34-year-olds were completely unrestrained — one of the highest percentages for all age groups. Plus, Susan DeCourcy, NHTSA Region 7 Administrator says, “we’re heading into the busiest travel season of the year with the holidays, so it’s imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belts.” Since “Click It or Ticket” began in 2003, national seat belt use has increased from 79 percent to 90.7 percent in 2019.
