Hillcrest Academy is offering open gym sessions starting this weekend. From 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Sundays, November 15th and 22nd as well as December 6th and 20th, fifth through eighth grade students can participate in activities that include basketball, volleyball, dodgeball and matball, which is like kickball according to Director of Enrollment Rebecca Beachy Miller. Students are required to wear face coverings and bring their own water bottle. Beachy Miller says they’re also asking parents to keep their students home if they’re not feeling well, “We would ask to make sure to take their temperature prior to coming and if it’s above 100.4 that we would ask that their child stay at home; or if they have any other type of, if they have two or more symptoms of COVID, what is the typical COVID symptoms, we would ask them to remain at home. Otherwise we will have hand sanitizers on site as, like I said the restrooms will be available if they need to wash their hands.” While there is no limit on the number of students who can participate and registration is not required, Beachy Miller says registration will give them a better head count for staffing purposes. There’s a link to registration at HillcrestRavens.org, where Beachy Miller says parents can also get last-minute updates on any cancellations or changes for the open gyms, “If they go under our admissions tab, where it has fifth through eighth grade events we will keep them updated like if there are any changes, like if all of a sudden the night before we’re saying, ‘Nope it’s too risky, we need to cancel this,’ that’s where they can find that information.” Beachy Miller says the open gyms are open to students throughout the area including Washington and Iowa City.
