In a season where fans are limited and energy won’t be coming from crowd noise, creating energy from within will need to be the standard. That energy from the Washington boys’ basketball team was on full display Monday, as they traveled to Centerville for opening night and smothered the Big Reds 90-38. 

As heard on KCII, the Demons came out on a mission starting the game on a 10-0 run before a Big Red timeout.  Centerville was able to weather the early storm by going on a few runs themselves and trailed just 22-16 after one. The two possession game did not last, as Washington outscored them 22-5 in the second to take a 44-21 lead into half and they never looked back. Centerville never got into double digits for a quarter again and fifth-year Demon head coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports despite his offense putting up 90 points, he was most impressed with the intensity on the defensive end. “It is easy to create energy when things are going well like today and the key for the season is to keep energy up when it is not going as well. Today we kept the intensity and focused more on the defensive end. Our goal was to keep them under 40 points and we did that. Our offense speaks for itself and we have plenty of guys that can score. When we were patient we got some great looks.”

The offensive firepower was coming from all over with five guys connecting from long range to finish with 12 threes total. Sophomore Ethan Patterson collected a game-high 23 points and junior Kasen Bailey was not far behind with 21. Lance Sobaski did a lot of little things to collect 15 points and Travis Leyden drained four triples to finish with 14.  

Washington starts up the season 1-0 and due to postponements later this week they are off until next Tuesday (12/8) when they host Pella for a girl/boy doubleheader.
