The Brighton Fire Department responded to a garage fire Wednesday evening.

According to the Washington County Communications Center the fire occurred at 101 South Liberty Street at about 6:47 p.m. Brighton Fire Chief Bill Farmer tells KCII that the homeowner had cleaned out their wood stove earlier that day and the ashes that were in a barrel near the unattached garage set the vinyl siding on fire. Farmer says when agencies arrived flames were shooting about 7-8 feet high above the garage. No injuries were reported, and Farmer estimates about 60% of the structure was damaged. Brighton QRS, Washington Fire Department, and Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.
