The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Tipton Friday and came home with wins over the Tigers in River Valley Conference play. The Golden Hawk girls started the night with a dominating 58-30 victory. Mid-Prairie was hot early, leading 21-6 after one quarter and 36-14 at the half. The Golden Hawks stretched their lead to 28 after three quarters with the score at 52-24. On this week’s KCII Radio Coaches Corner, head coach Danny Hershberger recapped the win. “We were able to get to the basket a lot and hit some outside shots. Myah Lugar led us with 24 points. She hit four threes in the game. She also did a great job getting to the line and she went eight for eight there. Maddie Nonnenmann did a great job taking what was given to her by the defense. Tipton focused on taking away Phelan Hostetler, she was double teamed most of the night. Our guards had to step up and make some plays and some shots for us and they did. Defensively, we wanted to put some pressure on them and force turnovers. Our girls did a great job of moving their feet on defense. I thought our rebounding continued to improve. We limited them to one shot per possession.”

The Golden Hawks were led by 24 points from Myah Lugar. Maddie Nonnenmann added 14 for Mid-Prairie. The Mid-Prairie defense was terrific, holding the Tigers to just 22% shooting from the floor including just 8% from three point land. With the win, the Hawks are 2-1 on the year as they get ready for Regina on Tuesday.

The Mid-Prairie boys also posted an impressive win, rolling through the Tigers Friday 54-25 for their first win on the season. It was a fast start for the Golden Hawk boys, leading 16-3 after one quarter they were up 31-14 at the break. Mid-Prairie put the game out of reach with a 16-4 run that spanned the entirety of the third quarter to grow the lead to 47-18. On Saturday’s KCII Radio Coaches Corner, head coach Daren Lambert broke down the win. “I wrote it on the whiteboard before the game. The last four years against them we were 1-7. The biggest jump for us from Tuesday to Friday came on the defensive end. We had 14 team steals. Even when they did break our press, we did a great job in the half court on defense. Those things led to some easy offensive transition baskets. Overall, very pleased with our work on both ends of the floor. Carter Harmsen had 17 but the thing I think he did a great job of was his shot selection. He didn’t force things. Ethan Kos in the post, just his second varsity game had a double double. Will Cavanagh had four rebounds and four assists, Jack Pennington had seven assists. Guys were sharing the basketball. The guys were playing for each other and that’s always going to lead to great things.”

A trio of Golden Hawks got to double figures, two had double doubles. Carter Harmsen finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Ethan Kos had 10 points and 10 boards while Alex Bean chipped in 11. Mid-Prairie is now 1-1 on the year and will face Iowa City Regina on Tuesday.
