Tuesday night, the Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams renewed their rivalry with Iowa City Regina inside Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. On the boys side, the Golden Hawks ended a 22-game losing streak to Regina by hammering the Regals 64-27. In a game heard on AM and FM KCII, Mid-Prairie controlled things from the opening tip, using a 9-0 run in the first quarter they opened up a 15-6 lead after the first eight minutes. The Hawks then used a 16-4 run that lasted the entire second quarter to open a 31-10 lead at the half. Mid-Prairie put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 22-8 that lasted the entire period and enacted the continuous clock in that stretch. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert talked about ending the streak and his team’s play “As a coach, you put those challenges out in front of those guys and you love to see them respond. The thing that I like most is that at no point did it feel like we let up tonight. This group is built differently with that competitive mindset. It was written up on the board tonight before the game, 0 for 22 and 10 years. We were able to walk right in and erase that off the board. We’re trying to change that history and this team is ready to do that. We’ve grown each game on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the whole team played well. Will Cavanagh, Jack Pennington and Luke Boyse were great tonight. Offensively, we push in transition, we look for easy baskets and we have some scorers, some guys that can hit shots. Our goal is to be balanced offensively, so they can’t just close down one guy. As an offense tonight we had 21 assists and that shows me that guys are playing for each other.”
The Golden Hawks did it on both sides of the floor, winning the turnover battle 18-9, outrebounding the Regals by 13 in the contest, and putting three in double figures. Alex Bean led the way with 17 points including four of the Hawks seven made three pointers. Carter Harmsen added 16 and Aidan Rath 10. Ashton Cook led Regina with 11 points. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 2-1 on the year as Regina falls to 1-2.
The Mid-Prairie girls got out to a great start but couldn’t hold the early lead, falling 49-43 to the Regals. The Hawks scored the first six points in the game, all from Phelan Hostetler and would lead 15-9 after the opening quarter. Regina got on track in the second period, outscoring Mid-Prairie 19-10 in the frame to take a 28-25 lead into the half. The two clubs see-sawed back and forth in the third with Mid-Prairie holding two separate, brief one point leads and Regina up just 35-34 going to the fourth. The Regals opened the final quarter with three straight three point goals to get some breathing room. Mid-Prairie climbed back within four at 44-40 late but didn’t have enough to complete the comeback. The Golden Hawks were led by Maddie Nonnenmann’s 20 points. With the loss, the Hawks are now 2-2 on the season.
