The Washington City Council approved moving forward with a Community Development Block Grant application for the 2021 water main project.
A public hearing on the matter was held at Tuesday’s meeting, and East Central Iowa Council of Governments Consultant John Bruce mentioned that the total project is estimated to cost $1,845,300 and the grant application is for $600,000. The project’s sewer improvements are targeted to an area generally between West Madison Street, West Washington Boulevard, and East Main Street, as a survey determined certain sewer and water mains as being in fair or poor condition and in need of improvements. While the city has committed the remaining funds of the project, Mayor Jaron Rosien noted that this cost will not be assessed to property owners. The grant application deadline is December 31st.
