COVID-19 is causing Waco Community School District to suspend all extracurricular activities for seventh through 12th grades.
A letter to parents and guardians from Superintendent Chris Armstrong says, “Due to the current situation regarding the numbers of students in quarantine and with greater than five students positive, we have made the difficult decision to pause all activities for two weeks. This means that practices will resume on January 1. Games are currently being rescheduled.”
The suspension of activities is effective immediately through December 31. Secondary students will have in-person classes today (December 18) to finish out the current semester, and the school building will then be closed to all activities both school and community-related from December 19 through December 30.
School officials say the rationale for the decision was to slow the spread of COVID-19 both locally and within households. This will allow for students and the school to be ready for in-person learning to resume on 1/5/21 and also for all sports to resume on 1/1/21. During this pause within the building, the school will also provide enhanced district cleaning.
