The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team closed out the 2020 portion of their schedule with a victory over Northeast Goose Lake Tuesday 51-33 at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Hawks controlled both sides of the ball early, holding an 11-4 lead after one quarter and up 24-9 at the half on the strength of 14 first half points, including a trio of three point goals from Myah Lugar and forcing the Rebels into 17 first half turnovers. Northeast got back in the game in the third quarter when Ellie Rickertsen put up 13 in the frame, bringing the Rebels back within 10 going to the fourth. In the final period, the Hawks were cold from the floor, starting the quarter on a four minute drought as Northeast closed the gap to five. Down the stretch, Mid-Prairie used a 15-3 run to ice the victory. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger talked about his team’s night. “Great effort defensively. We knew coming in that we had to limit Fowler, she scored 28 against us last year. The girls did a great job of talking, getting their hands in passing lanes and forcing turnovers. Myah Lugar got off to a really good start offensively knocking down some early threes and then when they closed on her she had some great drives to the basket. Nora is a great spark off the bench for our team. She does so many things well for us defensively and is always in the right spot. Her offense is coming along also each time she’s out on the floor. We closed well tonight after they made a run, we weathered that, forced turnovers and got big momentum plays down the stretch.”
The Hawks were led by Lugar’s 18 points. They forced 33 Rebel turnovers and outrebounded Northeast by seven in the win. Mid-Prairie is now 5-4 as they begin the holiday break.
