Traffic is completely open on East Washington Street after a home explosion occurred early Monday morning in the city of Washington. 

KCII reported live on scene at about 5 a.m. as the Washington and Ainsworth fire departments were extinguishing a fire from an explosion that occurred at 1114 East Washington Street. Traffic was blocked between North 11th and 12th avenues as crews responded and investigated the incident. According to Washington Fire Chief Brendan DeLong, the Washington County Communications Center received multiple reports of a home explosion at about 4 a.m. Upon arrival emergency crews found the two occupants in the home had been injured and both were treated at the scene and were transported to Washington County Hospital and eventually transferred to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. 

The home was a total loss with reports of damage to property as far as a city block from the incident. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting the investigation, and no additional information is available at this time. Washington Police Department, Washington County Ambulance Service, Washington Public Works, Iowa Department of Transportation, and Alliant Energy also assisted at the scene.
