The New Year starts up this evening for the Washington basketball teams when they face off with Burlington for a Southeast Conference matchup.
The Demon boys’ will look to stay on top of the SEC standings sitting at 3-0 in league play and 5-1 overall. All three conference victories were decided by single digits in the final week before the holiday break. The offense has been fueled by three players averaging double figures in Ethan Patterson, Kasen Bailey, and Trashaun Willis. Patterson leads the pack with 16 points a night and Lance Sobaski has hauled in 8.2 rebounds. The Grayhounds managed just one conference game in the first half and are 0-3 overall. Michael Alexander accounts for 17 of their 42 points a contest and Amarion Davis picks up five rebounds a game. Demon Head Coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports what he expects from Burlington. “They like to run and pressure the ball so we have been simulating that in practice. They brought everyone back from last year so they will be a tough out.” Washington won both meetings a season ago by three and 11 points.
The Demon girls are 0-3 in the league and 0-8 overall. Senior Anna Nacos started to heat up before break and averages 9.4 points a game while Josie Tanner chips in with 5.7. The Greyhounds have just one game under their belt and they fell to Mount Pleasant in that one by a final score of 55-15. They went 3-16 last winter and Alexis Standard is their top returner with 6.2 points a contest. Washington squeaked out a pair of victories last year against Burlington by two and eight points.
The boys will be at home with the girls on the road and both games get underway at 7:45 p.m. Listen to the boys’ contest on FM 106.1 KCII starting around 7:15 p.m.
