Washington and surrounding residents are invited to explore and unpack their relationship with white privilege and racism during a new book discussion series being hosted by Washington for Justice.
The organization is hosting five discussion sessions about the book, “Me & White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla F. Saad. The hour-long sessions will take place over the Zoom video conference application, scheduled for January 14th and 28th, February 11th and 25th, and March 11th. Washington for Justice Treasurer Haleigh Brockman says this event series is being led by their steering committee member Dan Henderson, and was born out of a desire from the organization to educate themselves and other community members, “We just had a very candid discussion about how we’d been trying to further educate ourselves about current issues. And so this was suggested I think to Dan and he had started reading it and he commented on how it’s causing him to do a lot of self reflection, and it really causes you to think about yourself, and your community, and the overarching structures of that and how that affects people of all different ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, everything.”
Participants are asked to purchase the book themselves, and are expected to pre-read for each session and keep a personal journal for each chapter’s prompts, which will be private. Information on how to register for the book talk is included here.
