It was Cancer Awareness Night for round two of the Washington and Fairfield rivalry showdown on Friday with the Demons splitting the girl/boy basketball doubleheader.
As heard on KCII, the Demon boys utilized a fast offensive start and pulled away late to capture a season sweep of the Trojans (1-4) with a 61-45 win. Fairfield’s Max Weaton was averaging 25 points a night coming in and quickly recorded 10 first quarter points. Washington’s Lucas Kroll then drew the assignment on the sophomore and held him to just four points the rest of the game. Weaton’s first quarter kept the Trojans around trailing just 19-12 after one and 33-21 at the break. Fairfield started the second half on a 6-0 run, but the Demons answered with a run themselves to get it back to double digits and the game never got any closer. Ethan Patterson finished with a game-high 19 points and Kasen Bailey added 14 points with five assists. Kroll had a strong floor game with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Head Coach Collin Stark credited Kroll’s defensive intensity on Weaton. “I think the biggest thing was Lucas worked really hard defensively. He looked really tired, but Lucas just kept working and working. Having him guard Weaton with Trashaun on the backside was key in slowing them down.” Washington moves to 6-3 overall and stays atop of the Southeast Conference standings with a 4-1 league record.
Second and third chance points doomed the Demon girls, as Hannah Simpson made a living with offensive put backs. The Trojan junior tallied 24 points to lead Fairfield (3-1) to a 56-23 victory. A 17-8 lead after one grew to 32-11 at half and the trend continued in the final 16 minutes. Anna Nacos led Washington with six points and the team drops to 1-9 overall with a 1-4 conference mark.
Both Demon squads return to the court Monday at Burlington Notre Dame in a doubleheader that can be heard on KCII.
