Here are the results for area athletes at the girls state wrestling tournament in Coralville.
After day one, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks are 16th of more than 120 teams with their score of 43.5 points. Waverly-Shell Rock is in first with 115 points. Sarah Meader leads the way for the Golden Hawks, winning both of her first day matches by fall to remain in the championship bracket at 152lbs. She beat Julianna Muxin of North Fayette Valley and Keisha Walker of Western Dubuque. She will wrestle in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Two other Golden Hawks are still alive in the tournament on the consolation side of the bracket with Bronwyn Brenneman going 3-1 on day one at 126 pounds and Mia Garvey 2-1 at 145lbs. Brenneman scored a tech fall win over Florence Assumani of Iowa City West to open the tournament and a second round pin of Elizabeth Oleson of Charles City before dropping a match to Ava Scranton of Anamosa and then rebounding to beat Cecilia Scarff of Southeast Polk by 7-1 decision. Garvey’s road included a first round 8-6 decision over Pita Garcia-Vazquez of West Liberty, a loss to Naomi Simon of Decorah and then a pin of Alandra Torres of Humboldt. Both will wrestle in consolation action Saturday.
Other Golden Hawks who participated included Caitlyn Busch at 138 and Madison Kelly at 145 who each went 2-2 during their time in Coralville. After opening round losses for each, Busch came back to beat Kyla Andrews of BGM by fall and Rose Lonsdale of Nodaway Valley by fall before being eliminated by Emma Strohman of Spencer, while Kelly came back to beat Emily Jeffries of Chariton by fall and Caelan Long of North Scott by fall before being knocked out by Kali Beaman of Humboldt.
Marissa Cline went 1-2 at 138lbs. After an opening round loss she regrouped with a win over Drew Chensvold of North Fayette Valley by fall before being knocked out by Bri Neuhaus of Anamosa.
Abigail Grout at 106, Emil Harmston at 113 and Ellie Brenneman at 126 finished their tournaments with 0-2 records.
For the Highland Huskies, they have five team points, led by Maddie Peiffer at 138. She opened the tournament with a 5-3 decision over Anabelle Hernandez of Vinton-Shellsburg before dropping a match to Trinity Rodgers of AGWSR. She rebounded in the consolation bracket to beat Maci Goodell of Vinton-Shellsburg by fall before being eliminated by Ainsley Dodd of Osage.
Championship and consolation action continues all day today at the Xstream Arena in Coralville.
