President Joe Biden has signed several executive orders since his inauguration, dismantling some of the Trump administration’s regulations, strengthening the nation’s COVID-19 response, and establishing environmental protections and changes to immigration policy.

When asked for his thoughts about the executive orders signed so far by the president, Senator Charles Grassley (R) commented on one in particular, “Doing away with the XL pipeline from Canada down to Kansas so we can get oil down to our refineries and help with the export of North American oil is very wrong on his part, very important for me to talk against it because of the thousands of jobs that are going to be lost as a result of it. And it’s also a kick in the teeth to our most friendly nation that we have in the world and that’s Canada.”

President Biden’s revoking of the Keystone XL Pipeline permit that was granted by the previous administration in March of 2019 follows a 2015 decision by the Obama administration determining that the pipeline would not serve the U.S. national interest, and that approval would undermine U.S. climate leadership. The pipeline also sparked controversy for cutting through Indigenous lands.
