The City of Kalona has submitted plans for seven projects they’d like to embark on with about $140,000 in municipal grant funds from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation (WCRF).
City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says they make their non-competitive application to WCRF describing their intended use of the funding on a yearly basis, “And if there’s something that might not meet the intent, then communities have a chance to go back and revisit that with the foundation. So it’s just a way we can share with them the positives we are doing with the funds in our community and that they’re being spent in conjunction with how they’d like to see them spent.”
Schlabaugh says the city’s proposed plans include about $50,000 for debt service on their community center, about $30,000 for developments associated with the Southtown recreation trail, and another $20,000 to add to the $40,000 set aside last year to build an Americans with Disabilities Act compliant playground. Schlabaugh says they hope to have the projects completed by the end of the calendar year. He anticipates approval from WCRF in late February or early March.
