Senior night in Wayland resulted in a split for the WACO basketball teams on Tuesday night when they welcomed Danville for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader.
Fresh off a massive 25-point victory over 13-win Van Buren the night prior, the Warrior girls carried that momentum into Tuesday by prevailing 49-41 over the Bears in overtime. The Warriors controlled the first half up 18-11 at the break, but a 15-3 Bear third quarter turned the tide. A mini fourth quarter comeback forced a 41-all tie at the end of regulation. The home squad ramped it up to outscore the Bears 8-0 in the overtime period and JET Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week Ellah Kissell tells KCII Sports they cranked it up defensively in the extra four minutes. “We played really tough defense. They were really good at driving to the hoop and once we stopped penetration they couldn’t dish it off to their post players. I thought that was the difference in the end.” Aubri Garnsey led the offense with 15 points and Kissell added nine. WACO turned Danville (6-12) over 23 times on the evening. The Warriors improved to 7-11 overall and 6-7 in the league.
After beating Lone Tree on Monday, the Warriors boys could not make it two in a row with a 51-40 loss. A 20-0 Danville (9-7) first quarter quickly threw a wrench in WACO’s plans for their first division victory. Reece Oswald came off the bench to record 10 points and Will Edeker added nine. Simeon Reichenbach recorded eight points and eight rebounds. The Warriors fall to 2-15 and 0-11 in the division.
