It’s that time of the year where basketball teams are just trying to survive and advance. The Sigourney girls did a lot more than just survive on Thursday when they got out to a fast start and never looked back in a 55-23 win over Moulton-Udell in a first round Class 1A regional.

As heard on KCII, the Savages utilized a full court press to turn the Eagles (7-13) over 10 times in the first half to build a 13-5 first quarter advantage and 31-9 at the break. An 11-2 third quickly put the game to bed in the second half. Senior Kaylee Weber recorded 11 of her game-high 15 points in the first 16 minutes. The Savages struggled shooting from deep, but Sidney Morse provided a lift in that department with four triples to finish with 14 points off the bench. Carly Goodwin rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12. 

Head Coach Zach Tremmel tells KCII Sports it all started with the press. “We knew they were suspect to pressure so we wanted to get easy buckets off of it. Carly and Rain Barthelman set the tone up top. We are not the greatest pressing team, but watching film it looked to be their weakness. We worked on it for a couple days and I thought we did a pretty good job in it.”

Sigourney improves to 17-5 and will host the quarterfinal round on Tuesday against Wayne. The Falcons are 14-7 and beat Twin Cedars 50-24 last night. Listen to the entire Savage girls playoff run on KCII.
