Dangerously cold wind chills are predicted for Washington County this weekend, with 26 degrees below zero expected Sunday morning by the National Weather Service Quad Cities Office.

Eric Turner with JET Physical Therapy in Washington advises that if you do go outside, to be sure to bundle up, as frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, “The wind chill and the wind is a big factor with that in combination with the temperature. As we start to approach 10 degrees below with increasing winds then you’re putting yourself at risk for some frostbite situations if someone’s out for any length of time and not dressed appropriately or even if they’re dressed appropriately in terms of lots of layers, that can still be a risk.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state groups at higher risk for hypothermia and frostbite are older adults without proper food, clothing, or heating, those who stay outdoors for long periods, those who drink alcohol in excess or use illicit drugs, or babies sleeping in cold rooms. When going outside, make sure the body parts most often affected by frostbite are covered: your nose, ears, toes, cheeks, chin, and fingers.
