The City of Kalona has another 200 boxes of food ready to distribute to those in need during their next pop-up pantry tomorrow.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says anyone facing food insecurity can make a drive through pickup between 9 to 11 a.m. at the public works building. He says they’re assessing the future of the pop-up pantries as well as weekly deliveries of free food bags and hot meals to seniors. Schlabaugh says they’ve surveyed food recipients and community groups on how they could help lighten the workload of city staff, “We’ve (the city) got it down pretty well on how to do it, but we need to make it sustainable and spread out that workload among other groups. How we do that is we’ll take those survey results and see if that’s 20 people, 60, 80, whatever that is and see how we can divide that up among those groups.”

Schlabaugh says they’ve been able to conduct the pop-up pantries and senior food deliveries for the past few months thanks to monetary donations. Schlabaugh says they have extended the free senior food bags and hot meals into the first couple of weeks in March and they’ll discuss what happens going forward at next week’s regular city council meeting.
