When soccer teams start hitting the pitch next week for the first set of games a new squad in Southeast Iowa will be among them.

For the first time in school history, Sigourney will have a soccer team this spring and will be apart of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. Former Central College Soccer player and current Savage Head Coach Dillon Maass tells KCII Sports how becoming a program came to fruition. “There has been a club team here at Sigourney and some parents were trying to give their kids an opportunity to play for the high school. I introduced myself on the first day and talked about my soccer background and my experiences at Central. We got the school board to approve the idea and then it was a matter of getting the word out about it to try to get other kids interested in playing.”

Getting other kids interested is exactly what they did with 18 girls and boys signed up and all of them being underclassmen. Maass explained what the team goals are this season. “Number one is to get better not only as soccer players, but as athletes. A lot of these kids play multiple sports and soccer can help them become an all around better athlete. We also want to be competitive in every game. The teams we play have a lot more experience than us, but we still want to be competitive. Last by not least, the game should be fun. They are in high school and playing should be a fun experience for them.”

The Savages will be a junior varsity only team in their first year and will face off with PCM, Mid-Prairie, Washington, Columbus Community, Pella Christian, Notre Dame, and Oskaloosa. The program’s inaugural game will be Monday at PCM.
