Spring can be a time for rejuvenation, especially for swine farmers.

Precision Structures Inc. Sales Representative Tim Messinger says long, difficult winters can wreak havoc on equipment and swine buildings, causing issues that may only emerge with the spring thaw. Messinger says a lot of local farmers may do their own spring maintenance on their swine buildings, but for those who need an extra hand, their service department provides a 20-point building check-up, “With buildings sitting in the winter they’re closed up to keep the pigs warm and all that kind of stuff so there’s not a lot of equipment. The feed equipment is all running of course, and the heaters and that stuff but once spring and summer rolls around then your curtains start going up and down, more of your fans are working and that kind of stuff. So probably the thing to be checking on is all the stuff that has to do with your ventilation. Check your fan motors, your fans are working fine, make sure your sensors, your temp. sensors, your humidity sensors are all working properly, the machines that control your curtains are greased and maintained and that kind of stuff.”

Precision Structures, Incorporated has been in operation in Wellman since 1983, and they recently opened a second location in northwest Iowa, working to serve more of the midwest area. You can hear more from Messinger during today’s KCII Special Edition Ag Magazine at 1 and 6 p.m.
