The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved several items regarding the secondary roads department this week.

The board approved a resolution for an Iowa Department of Transportation sign replacement program. County Engineer Jacob Thorius says they’ve worked with this program for several years, and they’ve received $10,000 in grant funds to replace road signs. The board then approved an amendment to the fiscal year 2021 five-year plan, which Thorius explains one of the amendments, “We’re changing the funding type for a bridge replacement project on Elm Avenue. We were originally programmed to do a full-blown replacement, we looked at that and we’re doing a rehab. That’s one where we replaced the deck, we already purchased that so we’re changing the funding type and the funds being used for that so that’s some housekeeping work there.”

Thorius says the other change is for a box culvert project on 128th Place near Highway 22, which Thorius says wasn’t originally in the plan but is being added as funds have been acquired and they are holding the bid letting in the next couple weeks. The board also approved the fiscal year 2022 five-year road plan and Iowa Department of Transportation budget, and acknowledgement of purchase of a boom-mounted mulcher that is going to be attached to a wheeled excavator the department purchased last fall and is expecting to receive in the next month. The mulcher was included in the current fiscal year budget.
