One of the biggest Southeast Iowa track meets of the year saw a few area track teams bring home a title last night at the Ekstrand Relays in Wayland.
The Washington boys claimed their first team title of the year by winning the A division with 177 points and running away from second place Mediapolis with 112. The throwing events is where the Demons feasted with Brayden Hartman winning the shot put (49’11’’) and Reece Mayer took home the discus crown with a personal best throw of 149’11 while fellow senior Kael Adam was second (133’3’’). Mayer tells KCII Sports everything was clicking for him. “I felt strong in warmups, had the wind at my back, and it really carried over to my first throw. Getting first place today is helping my confidence as we get set for conference and districts. All of the throwers are looking really good and we have been getting a lot better.” Washington also cleaned house in the open events with the rest of the nine event champions being Jacob Miller in the 100m (11.72) and 200m (24.13), Elijah Morris in the 400m (51.72), Lance Sobaski in the 800m (2:04), 1600m (4:39), and 3200m (10:02), and Ethan Patterson in the high jump 5’10’’.
Winfield-Mt. Union won the B division with 100 points to beat out New London’s 92. The Wolves had two event titles including Cam Buffington in the long jump (19’9.5’’) and the 4x400m relay (3:40). Lone Tree placed third in the team standings with 89 points, WACO fifth with 75, and Highland seventh with 64. Other first place area events were Highland’s Connor Grinstead in the 100m (11.75), Highland’s 4×100 (45.89) and 4x200m (45.89), WACO’s Braden Spain in the 400m (55.46), and WACO’s Mason Miller in the high jump (5’6’’).
Highland had the best girls finish placing second in the B division with 72 points and Danville won with 187. Mackenzie nabbed first in the 100m (13.59) while the 4x200m (1:55) and 4x400m relay were also champions (4:30). WACO placed third at home with 68 points, Sigourney fourth with 67, WMU fifth with 63, and Lone Tree ninth with 11. Washington placed fourth out six in the A division with 82 points. Championship events included Molly Klinzman for Washington in the 400m (1:07), WMU’s Jobey Malone in the shot (34’10’’), WACO’s shuttle hurdle (1:14), Avery Waterhouse in the 3000m (14:11), and Zoey Dennler in the 400m hurdles (1:15).
