A strong day on the links translated to a second place finish and three players on all conference for the Washington boys’ golf team when they traveled to Fairfield yesterday for the Southeast Conference meet.
The Demons finished the 18-hole meet with 333 strokes to beat out Fairfield’s 339, Keokuk’s 364, and Fort Madison’s 401, but not enough to top Mount Pleasant’s 326. Roman Roth led the team with a 39 front nine and 38 back to make it 77 for the day and a third place finish in the league. Nick Matheney of Mount Pleasant won it all with a 74. Isaac Vetter was fourth with an 82 and Grant Sobaski was also named all conference with an 85 to tie for sixth. Other Washington scores included Teague Mayer 89, John Prochaska 90, and Luke Beenblossom 98. The team had seven birdies overall in the tournament. They now gear up for sectionals at home on Friday.
For the first time this year the Demon girls’ golf team did not stand atop of the team standings in a meet, as they traveled to Beaver Creek Golf Course in Grimes and finished second in a 12-team tournament. Washington still shot an impressive 330 in the 18-hole meet, but it was not enough to best 4A’s West Des Moines Valley with a 315. Anna Nacos was runner-up meet medalist with a 74, just behind Marshalltown’s Amber Henson with a 73. Kiki Bruner was sixth out of the 80-player field with a score of 78, Josie Tanner was 11th with 85 strokes, and Kaylin Long as well as Makenna Conrad shot 94 to tie for 20th. The Demons get right back on the links today at Stone Creek in Williamsburg.
