A strong season came to a close Thursday night for the Washington boys’ soccer team when they traveled to Fort Madison to play Fairfield in a first round class 3A substate game and could not get much rolling in an 8-1 loss.
These two squads split in the regular season, but the Trojans (10-4) were hitting on all cylinders in the rubber match with five first half goals and a 5-1 halftime advantage continued to grow out of break. Andrew Twohill was a tough player to stop with four goals for Fairfield. Angel Mata recorded his first varsity goal for Washington in the 26th minute off of a pass from Noah Suchan. The orange and black finished the campaign 9-6, the best record for a program that has been around since the mid-2000s. Head Coach Sally Hart was pleased with the efforts all season. “I’m proud of this team and their record-setting season. They came into it ready to make up for lost time after not getting to play last year. Our six seniors leave big shoes to fill and I’m looking forward to see how our underclassmen step up next spring.”
Those six seniors include Suchan, Zac Stout, Luciano Marcelino, Daniel Marcelino, Simeon Buie, and Ayden Frazer.
