Congresswoman for Iowa’s 2nd District Mariannette Miller-Meeks stands by her decision to not wear a face mask on the House chamber floor last week for which she was fined as it violated House rules.
This comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have advised that those who are fully vaccinated don’t need to wear a mask indoors or outdoors. Miller-Meeks says we should be following the science and not “fining the science” as she is fully vaccinated and roughly 75% of House members have been vaccinated, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D). Pelosi has refused to change the House’s rules until more members are vaccinated. Miller-Meeks tells KCII that in order to motivate people to get vaccinated, incentives need to be given, “I spoke about this on the floor of the House on April 22nd it was very important that we should follow the science and that we should be the leaders that we are elected to be. That the House chamber could be a role model for normality and to give people hope, and it was not helpful when Dr. Fauci had said earlier in the year that even if everybody’s vaccinated we would still be wearing masks in 2022.”
Miller-Meeks says she was thoughtful in her decision to not wear a mask as she spoke on the House floor on May 14th urging to allow those that are fully vaccinated to go without masks if they choose.
