The dynasty is a live and well for the Mid-Prairie girls’ track team and Saturday they added to an already eye-popping resume by capping off their third straight team championship at the state meet in Des Moines.
The Golden Hawks came into the final day at the Blue Oval in prime position in the class 2A team standings and Saturday’s performances did not disappoint en route to 61 total points to pull away from second place Northeast Goose Lake with 49. Danielle Hostetler finished a three-time champ after winning the 1500m in 4:55.09. The freshman won the 3000m on Thursday and was a part of the victorious distance medley relay on Friday. Mitzi Evans delivered valuable points by placing second in the 800m (2:20) and fourth in the 200m (26.36). Other results included 4x100m relay in third (50.59), Hostetler eighth in 800m (2:20), Sydney Yoder ninth in 1500m (5:00), and sprint medley 21st (1:56). In all, Mid-Prairie had three event titles and nine medals throughout the three days. The Mid-Prairie boys also received hardware on championship Saturday with Thaddeus Shetler placing seventh in the 1600m (4:27) and Jamison Stutzman just missed out in the 800m finishing 10th (2:01).
The Washington boys had a productive three events to finish 12th in the class 3A standings with 23 points. The sprint medley relay nabbed fourth (1:34.64) and Lance Sobaski was seventh in the 800m (1:58.85). The junior also was 12th in the 1600m (4:33) and Abby Kleese was 23rd on the girls’ side in the 800m (2:40). Washington received four medals at state including their first individual champ in 15 years with Elijah Morris winning the boys 400m.
The only class 1A result from Saturday was the boys 3200m where Columbus Community’s Isaac Acosta placed 15th (4:49) and Sigourney’s Mason Moore was 16th (4:52). One area athlete medaled throughout the three days and that was Columbus Community’s Michelle Diaz placing eighth in the girls shot put.
