The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team celebrated Thursday in Kalona after knocking off Camanche for their first win of the season by an 11-3 score. Camanche took an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first, the Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the second with Brittney Kinsinger supplying the hit to drive in Madeline Schrader, with Kinsinger coming in later in the inning. The Indians put up a single run in the top of the third to tie things at two and from there it was all Mid-Prairie. The Golden Hawks scored four times in the third, three times in the fourth and two in the sixth. The Golden Hawks batted all the way through the order in the third and fourth innings keyed by RBI hits from Katelyn Schneider, Dawsyn Miller and Schrader in the third, Schneider and Schrader again in the fourth and Dakota Mitchell in the sixth. The Mid-Prairie offense also capitalized on six Indian errors. That was more than enough for starter Myah Lugar who got the win, going the distance, giving up just three runs on eight hits. After the game, Golden Hawk head coach Matt Hoeppner talked about the performance and the feeling of getting the first win. “I think once our batters finally timed out what was coming through, there were a lot of girls that were able to show the work that they have been doing since January. We have been going back and forth trying to balance the lineup between our best hitters and our best fielders in the right spot and I think we are getting close. The kids really respond and are ready to go right away. That shows the way the program is progressing. Our previous six games it seemed like we either fielded the ball or hit the ball but not both, and tonight we put it together.”

The Hawks finished with 10 hits overall, seven of the nine in the starting lineup recorded at least one, led by Schrader’s two for three night with three RBI and three runs scored. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 1-6 on the year, they take on Davenport North tonight.
