Tuesday gave the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball program a night to celebrate senior Myah Lugar. Mid-Prairie took one of a two game set from visiting Iowa City Regina in Kalona. The Regals won the first match up 10-1. Regina had a big start, scoring four times in the first inning on one hit and three Mid-Prairie errors. Trailing early, the Hawks got on the board with a single run in the second when Brenna Jehle singled home Madeline Schrader with two outs to make it 4-1. Things stayed that way until the fifth when Regina added one and then broke things open with a five run sixth, including a three run homer from Annie Gahan to put the game out of reach. The Regals pounded out 11 hits, eight of the nine in the starting lineup scored at least one run. Jehle reached twice for the Hawks on a single and a walk, Dakota Mitchell, Dawsyn Miller and Gabi Robertson each had a base hit. Myah Lugar took the loss in the circle going seven innings, giving up 11 hits, 10 runs and striking out four.

Mid-Prairie got revenge in the nightcap, ten running the Regals 12-2 in six innings. Regina took an early lead with an unearned run in the first. Mid-Prairie tied it with an unearned run of their own in the second when Madeline Schrader reached on an error and Brenna Jehle doubled her in with two down. Things stayed tied at one until the fifth when Abby Clark smacked a solo homer to make it 2-1 Regina. From there, it was all Golden Hawks, in their last two at bats, Mid-Prairie piled up 11 runs on eight hits and sent 18 batters to the plate, with eight of the nine in the starting lineup scoring runs in that sequence alone. Hannah Sellers led Mid-Prairie with three RBI on two hits, Dakota Mitchell and Katelynn Schneider each drove in a pair while Jehle and Brittany Kinsinger finished with one RBI each. Dawsyn Miller recorded her second win in the circle in 24 hours, throwing a complete game five hitter, giving up two runs, walking two and striking out two. After the doubleheader, Mid-Prairie senior Myah Lugar talked about this year’s team and what senior night meant to her. “The girls are so great and I couldn’t do what I do without them. We’re led by great coaches and we have all taken on a leadership role. I wouldn’t want to be any other place. We’re really working on building a tradition and I couldn’t be more thankful. This is so much fun, we have all of the tools we need to be successful and we are really starting to put them together. I feel so grateful to be part of the Mid-Prairie program and community. It’s an overwhelming gratefulness. I hope I am looked back on by the program as someone who was a positive role model and part of the turnaround for the program.”

With the split, the Hawks are now 9-26. They travel to Washington Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Demons.
