Both summer sports programs at Sigourney started the July 4th weekend with a bang on Friday when the baseball and softball squads wrapped up the South Iowa Cedar League titles.
Tied with Lynnville-Sully coming into the final conference day, the baseball team would not be denied of their first conference championship since 1994 when they steamrolled English Valleys (6-14) by a 14-3 final score headlined by a nine run third. The offense had five hits and 10 free passes led by Cade Molyneux going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bo Schmidt and Max Phillips each brought in a pair of tallies. Cade Streigle was the winning pitcher going all five innings giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out 10. Lynnville-Sully was tripped up by Montezuma 4-3 so the Savages captured the outright title with a 13-3 league mark. Head Coach Lee Crawford joked about his team’s celebration. “We obviously haven’t won many because we need to learn how to dog pile. They ran onto the field, dumped the cooler, and all of that stuff. In all seriousness, they took the time to relish the moment and celebrated their accomplishments. The biggest thing for me is afterwards our players said we are not done yet and have bigger goals moving forward.” Sigourney is 16-4 overall and travels to Winfield-Mt. Union today.
The softball team defeated English Valleys 12-0 to tie Lynnville-Sully at the top of the standings with matching 15-1 conference records. The co-champion Savages peppered 12 hits against the Bears (13-12) led by Kaylee Weber going 4-for-4 with three RBI and Josephine Moore brought in five runs. Carly Goodwin tossed another no-hitter in the six frames giving up just two walks and striking out 16 of the 18 retired batters. Sigourney closes the regular season 22-8 and host either Tri-County or English Valleys on Wednesday in the second round of regionals.
