Chances were plentiful for the Washington baseball team on Friday, but they couldn’t cash in against Clear Creek-Amana and fell to the road Clippers 4-1 in a first round class 3A game.

As heard on KCII, all of the scoring came in just two half innings with the Clippers putting up a four spot in the second on the strength of three free passes, a sac fly, and a two out RBI knock. The Demons had a prime spot to do damage in the third with a bases loaded no out scenario, but could only scratch across one run. That tally was plated on a double play where no RBI was awarded and that was followed by a groundout to end the threat. More traffic was on the base paths in the fourth, but a rare triple play ended the inning when Travis Leyden’s bunt was caught in the air at third and the runners at first and second were late getting back to their bag. In total, Washington had 10 runners in scoring position with less than two outs and they could only register the one run. The team had five knocks with Kole Williams having a double and a pair of walks. Four was the magic number on the mound for the junior, as Williams tossed four innings giving up four runs on four hits and allowing four free passes. Ethan Patterson came in for just his second pitching outing of the season and recorded the final nine outs without giving up a run on two knocks. Brock Reade was the top Clipper recording half of their hits on a 3-for-4 night and got the win on the bump tossing six frames surrendering just one run on five hits.

Head Coach Nathan Miller tells KCII Sports he could not be more proud of his team after a year of adversity. “We started the year with a lot of injuries in the first week and we had a lot of guys step in and do a nice job. We had five brand new starters to break in this year and I thought our guys did tremendous in adjusting to the game. I thought our pitching staff got stronger as the year went on and that should be a strength for us next year.”

Washington closes the summer 15-14 and they say goodbye to three seniors in Reece Mayer, Wilx Witthoft, and Myles Jones.
