Rhyming phrases that will be posted to greet visitors to the city of Washington and bid them a fond farewell were announced during the Artfest and Chair-a-Thon Auction Thursday night.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce held a contest for Burma-Shave road sign-style slogans to be posted on County Road G36 with the permission of the landowner. The chamber tourism committee unveiled the slogans at the Central Park bandstand. For those driving westbound the signs will say, “For more than stores and folks who care, the fountain calls, visit our square,” which was submitted by Dr. Paul Towner. The eastbound signs will say, “Hope you had fun and enjoyed your stay, please come back and visit another day,” which was submitted by Sue Meeks. Both winners each received $50 in chamber bucks, and Chamber Director Michelle Redlinger says the signs are anticipated to be installed by the fall. Redlinger shared her appreciation for the tourism committee’s work in promoting the city, “They have helped with different projects. We recently revisited the barn quilts of Washington and we updated those brochures and where those were all located. We really would have a very minor impact on the community if it were not for the volunteers.”
Redlinger added that if anyone would like to join the tourism or other chamber committees to reach out to her, and you can find her contact information here.
