The City of Washington has seen many visitors this summer as the new Wellness Park has hosted its first season of sporting events.

YMCA of Washington County CEO Amy Schulte has nothing but good things to say about operations at the park as the organization is in charge of concession stand operations, scheduling, and general oversight of the sports complex, “Just being out there working in the concession stands, helping with some of the programs that are going on out there. For myself, hearing everybody really just praise what we have here and being thankful for such a nice facility. It’s brought so many people into our community, just a lot of great comments and I just think that it’s really a feather in our cap here in Washington and so I think that the Washington City Council and the parks department has done just a great job by having that new Wellness Park here.”

Schulte attended a city council meeting earlier this summer to give her gratitude for their vision and work in making the park a reality. DeLong Construction was the general contractor for the approximately $3 million project that includes two full-sized soccer fields, four baseball/softball fields, sand volleyball courts, a connection to the Kewash Nature Trail, and restroom/concession facilities. The project was paid for in part by a $650,000 Washington County Riverboat Foundation grant, as well as grants from Wellmark, the Kansas City Royals, and the Minnesota Twins.
