We continue our top 10 best sports stories countdown from the 2020-21 academic year with today being number five on our list. The fifth best story from Washington takes us the gridiron when the orange and black made a statement to start the 2020 fall.
Quite possibly the toughest non-district schedule in the entire state, the Demons were not intimidated by a pair of powerhouse schools and turned some heads in the first two weeks. They opened the campaign on August 28th with a home bout against #8 in class 4A Bettendorf, a semifinalist the previous season. The defense was smothering in this one with three timely interceptions, including a pick-six from all state linebacker Trashaun Willis to put the finishing touches on a 19-10 stunner at Case Field. The Demons trailed 10-0 early, but the offense took advantage of great field position and cashed in on rushing scores from Wyatt Stout and Wilx Witthoft. While this win was impressive, the Demons had no time to celebrate with a trip to Solon looming for week two. A thorn in their side for many years, the Demons looked like the superior team this time around by controlling the entire game en route to a 33-18 victory. Willis showed off his big play ability offensively by throwing for 149 yards and a score while running in two more for 95 yards. Spencer Sotelo caught a touchdown in the Demon’s first win against the Spartans since 2015.
Washington would go on to have an undefeated regular season and capture their first district title in seven years. They finished the fall 8-1 after falling to West Delaware in the round of 16. Check back in tomorrow for number four on our countdown when we travel to the hardwood.
