Our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from 2020-21 school year continues with number four on our list. In this countdown we include area schools of Columbus, Highland, Lone Tree, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Keota, and Sigourney. The fourth best story takes us to Winfield in a year to remember for girls athletics.
The memorable year got started in the fall when a senior laden Wolves volleyball team captured their first conference championship since 1996. They went 21-7 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division. A sweep of Mediapolis on October 13th sealed the crown and that was their first time defeating the Bulldogs since 2001, head coach Dave Pieart’s first season. Seven seniors made up the squad and much of those same players steamrolled a magical basketball season. The Wolves went undefeated in the regular season and finished the winter 18-1 overall with a regional semifinal berth. The group was the definition of a team with no player averaging double figures, but seven of them averaging at least five points a night. The athleticism of the school showed up once again in the spring with a pair of track events competing at state. Jobey Malone threw the shot and the shuttle hurdle relay team ran that consisted of Keetyn Townsley, Kayreanna Sharar, Morgan Grelk, and Kyndal Townsley. The year culminated in another strong season by the softball team finishing 17-6 and second in the SEISC-North. All state hurler Madie Anderson capped off an illustrious career by pitching every inning and recording a tiny 0.58 ERA.
Check back in tomorrow for number three on our countdown when we look at the summer in Sigourney.
