Our top 10 best sports stories countdown continues today with the third best story from the 2020-21 school year. In this countdown we include area schools of Columbus, Highland, Lone Tree, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Keota, and Sigourney. The third best story looks back at a memorable summer for the Sigourney baseball and softball teams. 

With both squads returning a lot from successful 2020 seasons, high expectations surrounded the Sigourney summer teams in 2021 and that hype was met with results. For the first time in school history, both teams were crowned South Iowa Cedar League champs in the same summer. The Savage softball squad recorded a 15-1 conference slate and returned to Fort Dodge for the first time since 2017. Exciting postseason games got them there including back-to-back 1-0 pitcher duels and a 6-3 victory over Belle Plaine in the regional final. They went 1-1 at state to cap off the season 26-9. Carly Goodwin was a big reason why with a 0.67 ERA in the circle and the freshman hit .495 at the dish. Lone senior Kaylee Weber cleaned up offensively with 36 RBI and a .500 on base percentage. The baseball team put together an impressive resume as well by winning the SICL for the first time since 1994 with a 13-3 league record. They defeated Winfield-Mt. Union 11-1 and Burlington Notre Dame 13-7 to advance to a class 1A district title game where they had SEISC Champs New London on the ropes, but one tough inning led to a 4-3 loss. Sigourney finished 19-6 and was a balanced group with a .307 team batting average and a collective 2.66 ERA. Cade Streigle had a bulk of the work on the hill with a 2.33 ERA in 36 innings and all state selection Cade Molyneux recorded a .471 batting average. Both Savage teams lose just one senior in what might be an encore performance in 2022.
