The filing window begins today for those looking to serve on their local city council or school board.

Washington County residents have from now until 5 p.m. September 16th to file their nomination paperwork for the November 2nd city and school election. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must file an affidavit of candidacy and nomination petition with their respective city clerk or school board secretary. For city elections the number of signatures required for the nomination petition is at least 25 for cities with a population of 3,500 or greater, 10 for those with a population between 100 and 3,499, and five for a population of 99 or less. For school elections, districts with fewer than 1,000 registered voters require a minimum of 10 signatures, and for districts with more than 1,000 voters the minimum is 1% of the number of registered voters, or 50, whichever is less.

Mayor, 2nd Ward, 4th Ward, and an At-Large council seat are expiring for the City of Washington this year. On the Washington Community School Board, terms are expiring for District 2, District 5, and an At-Large seat. For a link to election paperwork, visit here.
