On a night to honor the heroes of the community for their service, it was also a night where the Demon defense were the heroes on the gridiron in a week two victory. The Washington football team got in the win column for the first time in 2021 by pitching a 22-0 shutout of rival Mount Pleasant to down the Panthers for the 11th straight time.

As heard on KCII, the Demon offense developed rhythm early and had no trouble moving the rock, but was plagued by two first quarter fumbles including one inside the Panther (0-2) 10-yard line. Backed up in a few possessions, the Demon defense held strong and kept Mount Pleasant under 50 yards in the first half. Washington led 8-0 at the break after an Ethan Patterson 13 yard scoring strike to Jacob Miller early in the second. Despite not starting due to injury and visibly not 100%, Patterson had a gutsy performance in the second half with another touchdown connection to Miller and an eight yard scamper into the end zone for the dagger with one minute to go. Both of the second half touchdowns were set up by Ethan Zieglowsky interceptions including one that was returned for 55 yards. Patterson finished 11 of 21 for 218 yards and two touchdowns with one more on the ground. Miller was the main target with five receptions for 68 yards and John Prochaska had three for 93. Getting a few guys back on the offensive line opened things up for Tayven Stuart with 23 carries for 98 yards. The defense held Mount Pleasant to just 160 yards of total offense including 2.6 yards per rush.

Head Coach Nick Ehret had a lot to say about his defense. “Coach Kelly Williams had a great gameplan and the kids were flying around. When we are full strength this is what we are capable of doing. Everyone was pumped, they made a lot of great plays, and it was an all around tremendous defensive effort.”

Washington improves to 1-1 and hit the road to Tiffin next week to face Clear Creek-Amana (1-1).
