A Washington man was recently ordered to serve five years of probation for a felony domestic abuse incident.

Court documents show that through a plea agreement, 47-year-old Michael Dean Carlin is convicted of domestic abuse assault as a habitual offender, and possession of a controlled substance, third or subsequent offense, both class D felonies. Fifteen-year prison sentences were suspended for each count for Carlin to serve five years probation for each offense and the sentences to run concurrently. Fines totalling $2,050 were suspended, and Carlin was found not to have the reasonable ability to pay category B restitution for these charges. A second count of felony domestic abuse was dismissed, as well as charges for possession of contraband in a correctional institution, a class D felony, unauthorized use of a credit card, an aggravated misdemeanor, false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

The charges stemmed from August 2020 incidents. The criminal complaint shows that a Washington police officer was called to a residence in the 700 block of South Avenue C after a passerby heard two people yelling back and forth. Upon walking to the front door Carlin slammed the door. The officer then knocked and a female came sprinting out of the door followed by Carlin. The female victim told the officer that Carlin had been abusing her all night and that when she tried to leave the night prior Carlin held her against her will. Carlin was arrested and taken to the Washington County Jail where upon being searched staff discovered drug paraphernalia and narcotics.
