As U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinkin testifies in front of Congress this week about the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan, Senator Charles Grassley (R) says they will have to use negotiation in order to rescue remaining Americans who are now under Taliban rule.

Grassley tells KCII he was horrified at the events surrounding the withdrawal of U.S. forces including the 13 service members that were killed in an attack at a Kabul airport and the lives of Afghans that have been jeopardized as the Taliban overtook the country on August 15th, “The President has really acted irresponsibly by telling the Taliban when we’re going to leave. It would be okay with me if President Biden had a date, even August 31st in his mind of when we’re going to pull out, but you should never tell your enemies what your plans are.”

Grassley wrote to the Departments of State, Defense and Homeland Security that while it is important to evacuate Afghans that have assisted the U.S. during the last 20 years it’s important that their vetting and screening process prevents terrorists or other national security threats from infiltrating efforts to provide humanitarian relief.
