A pair of KCII area football teams were recognized in this week’s high school poll from the Iowa Associated Press. In class 1A, the state has taken notice of the Sigourney-Keota Cobras who are out to a 4-0 start on the campaign. SK has rattled off victories against Durant, Mid-Prairie, Centerville and Pleasantville by a combined 149-39 total. The Cobras are eighth in 1A with 20 total touchdowns on the year, and eighth with 1,549 total yards. Those numbers are keyed by the state’s second best ground game in 1A with 1,333 yards for the Cobras this year at an impressive 7.2 yard per carry clip. Their 16 touchdowns on the ground are third best in Iowa. The SK defense has forced an average of two turnovers per game. Individually, Cade Molyneux is seventh in 1A with a dozen total touchdowns. His 906 total yards are sixth in Iowa. On the ground, he leads the Snakes and the state with 833 yards, third in Iowa with an eight yard per carry average for those with at least 50 carries, is fourth with 104 total carries and his 10 rushing scores are also fourth in 1A. Cole Clarahan is tied for the state lead in 1A with three interceptions.
The WACO Warriors check in at No. 9 in this week’s 8-man poll. The Warriors are also unbeaten at 5-0 with wins over Twin Cedars, Springville, HLV, English Valleys and Iowa Valley. WACO has won their games by a combined 229-57 score. The boys in blue are seventh in the state with 33 total touchdowns on the season. The Warriors have amassed 1,376 yards on the ground, third most in Iowa, on a state leading 204 carries as a team. Their 27 rushing scores are second in the state. As a defense their 38.5 tackles for loss are sixth most in Iowa. They lead the state in takeaways with a fourth most in Iowa eight fumble recoveries and a state leading 11 interceptions. Individually, the Warriors are led by Simeon Reichenbach with 635 rushing yards, seventh in Iowa. His 12 touchdowns on the ground are also seventh. He is third in the state for those with at least 50 carries on the year, averaging 10.4 yards per touch. Defensively, Colton Leichty has recovered four fumbles, second most in the state and Mason Miller is second in Iowa with four interceptions.
Both the Cobras and the Warriors will be in action on Friday when No. 4 SK travels to No. 6 Pella Christian for a top 10 showdown in 1A while No. 9 WACO travels to New London.
