The Highland football team held a lead at the half, but the Alburnett Pirates were on top at the final gun in a 26-21 contest in Riverside Friday. Things were tight throughout with the Pirates up 8-7 after one quarter. The Huskies were the only team to find the end zone in the second frame taking a 14-8 lead into the break. Alburnett would tie the contest at 14 after three and the Pirates outscored Highland 12-7 in the fourth to take the road win.
Highland was outgained in total 379 yards to 166 including 197 to 120 on the ground and 182 to 46 through the air. Connor Rock was 14 of 27 through the air for Alburnett with 182 yards a touchdown and three interceptions. On the ground, Carson Klostermann had 34 carries for 153 yards and a pair of scores. In the passing game for Highland, Connor Grinstead was three of 14 for 46 yards and a touchdown to Logan Bonebrake on a seven yard connection. Bonebrake led the ground game with a pair of carries for 51 yards including a 35 yard touchdown scamper. The Highland defense was led by Jaden Schmid with 10 tackles. The Huskies forced four turnovers in the game with Yahir Jimenez and Logan Bonebrake picking off passes and Luke Miller and Schmid covering up Pirate fumbles. Both teams are now 2-3 with Highland getting ready to welcome the Wapello Indians to Riverside for Homecoming on Friday.
